King of the mountain

Daddy and I dug out all the lava rock from the landscaping around the house and piled it up in the driveway to be removed. Really it was just me, Dad mostly played with his trucks. It took us several days, lots of sweat and trips with a wheel barrow, but it finally got done. Needless to say it was A LOT of rock. Now on to some new plants and ground cover in the spring.

Like father like son

Quinn would play ball all day long....not exaggerating...Everything is baseball. He found an old, torn batting glove of Brian's and sports it all the time. Now that the weather is getting chilly, the living room has become his "field." He really believes it too. Brian was vaccuuming and Quinn said, "Dad, why are you vaccuuming my field." Lately, he has been saying that he teaches baseball to the big boys. I can only assuming he means the Kimberly Baseball team. Not so sure how coach feels about that.

Mr. and Mrs. Grosfeld

On October 1st, we welcomed the final man into the Six Sexy Singing Soprano family. For the last 11 years, these five women have been my best friends. While some people have come into my life and gone, I am confident that these six will remain. This weekend we celebrated with Sarah and Matt as they became one.

Missing two...the bride and the maid of honor.

(some of) the men.

Comparing bumps....just 2.5 weeks away from each other. #4 for Tereas and #2 for me.

Finally a moment with the bride.
And then there were twelve.

On the worksite

Quinn is a digger man. He has become quite sophisticated. He'll correct you if you say digger and remind you that it's an excavator, crane, dump truck, backhoe loader, etc. He'll tell you their specific jobs. So because of this love of large vehicles, we ventured off to Quarry Quest.

Not only were their diggers, but he got to take his first ride on a school bus from the parking area down into the deep belly of a quarry.

He got to take a ride an excavator and scoop up lots of rocks and dirt. Some of the lines to use the equipment were quite long and slow moving, so we passed. But we've got connections to our very own digger man who can take us on rides whenever we want.

Three became four....

Introducing Baby Meyers #2.

Here's baby at 20 weeks.

While at the ultrasound, the technician said that the baby was looking excellent...everything developing as normal, lots of movement, all the right stuff. When taking measurements, she noticed that the baby's head was measuring in the 90th percentile. I had to laugh...this baby is just like his/her big brother. Big headed babies....that's how we roll.

So far this pregnancy is exactly like Quinn's. No nausea or yuckiness. A little tired here and there. Still able to exercise. No extreme smell or food aversions. However, the belly seems to be coming on much quicker this time.

Wild man

When looking for a local adventure for one final activity of the summer, there's one Wisconsin treasure that remains for kids....Bay Beach in Green Bay. At $0.25 a ticket, you can ride all day and hardly make a dent in the budget.

I thought he'd freak out. Unlike one of his parents who will remain unidentified who hates rides of all kinds, Quinn has an unknown wild man streak.

He knows how to drive boats...

"What do you mean, I need a lifejacket?"

Brings up the rear of a long train, just like the little red caboose...

flies fighter jets and shoots big guns...

Tames giant ladybugs...

Drives the fastest race car....

Masters the lean...

says hello to the ladies (and dad)....

and still manages to win the race.

And like all boat driving, wild beast taming, jet flying, race car driving wild men...needs a nap at the end of a long morning.

Learning to share

Just before school started, we decided that it was time for Quinn to say good bye to his crib and transition into a big boy bed. While our first attempt months ago was not successful, this time went much smoother. We fully cleaned his room....grandma style. In the process, Quinn taught Mama a lesson.

After moving out all of his furniture into every open space upstairs, a small voice said, "I want to play with that truck." This very special semi was only a decoration in his room until this point. It was my truck....my grandpa's truck, made just for me with his old calloused hands.

After World War 2, Grandpa Gunvalson made trucks and toys for the kids in Spring Valley when there wasn't money for Christmas presents. Later, Uncle Chris got one when Grandpa's hands were smooth enough to still feel for a fine sanded finish. Late in his life, he made trucks for the girls. Rougher, aged, calloused hands and cracked finger tips, no longer able to feel the smooth, glass like surface....made trucks just for us...just for me. As a child, Chris played with his. Mine had not been touched. It was just my special truck.

So when Quinn asked for the truck, I faced the decision to keep the truck just for me, or to allow Quinn to have it. Toys are toys. He drives his trucks in the drive way and digs with them in the dirt. But those trucks can easily be replaced. A trip to the toy store is just minutes way. But Grandpa's hands are an eternity away.

A tearful conversation with Brian and his wise advice that Grandpa would have loved nothing more than to have his great grandson play with the truck, especially having had no son's of his own, lead to mama to learn to share. I battled my selfishness reluctantly, wanting to hold on to this physical connection to a man of such noble character, to hold on to this truck that represented a diligent work ethic, a generous spirit, and loving heart....my Grandpa...Quinn became the new owner of the special silver semi made just for him so many years before his birth by a man who would have been so madly in love with him.
